On Monday, June 21, four Cosby High School Key Clubbers, along with their advisor, Miss Donna Jones, travelled to Ronald McDonald House in Knoxville, TN.

After shopping for food at the local Wal-Mart, they headed out to K-town. Since this was our first summer event, it was obvious these eager teenagers had not seen each other since June 4th. As we travelled the 45 minutes to 17th street, Brianna, Harlea, Louis, and Allyson caught up on the many adventures that had transpired in the few short weeks that had passed since their last encounter.

Once at RMH, the four divided up the chores and began the task at hand. Louis made the ground beef, while Allyson attempted to chop the lettuce and tomatoes. Harlea and Brianna made the refried beans and assisted Allyson in warming the taco shells. Miss Jones played photographer and made sure she captured all of their hard work. After the food was done, they cleaned the kitchen, booked their next trip for July, thanked the RMH volunteer on staff and headed out to find some food of their own.

Trying to please four teenagers is impossible, unless the decision is usually something the advisor would normally not approve of. After several minutes of deliberation, the four agreed upon a restaurant…and we were off.

After dinner, we headed for our next destination, one of our long time traditions after a long, hard, service activity, Starbucks!

Our bellies were full, our chocolate craving satisfied, and now, to our final destination, home!

It is always very satisfying to go to RMH and meet the families that we serve. It is especially heart warming when you get to see folks from Cocke County take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. I got to see one of my former students last night as his child has been at ETCH for several weeks. Thank you to all of the Key Clubs and other organizations/individuals that make this house possible!

Key Clubbers attending the 64th Annual Kentucky-Tennessee Key Club Convention , held March 19-21, 2010, in Franklin, Tennessee, left with rave reviews for the weekend, and with a renewed excitement for the Key Club organization. It was a magical, fun-filled, and educational time for approximately 460 Key Club members and their advisors, as the district came together to put a “Spotlight On Service.”

Much of the weekend was spent dancing, thanks to the program provided by the principal convention speaker, inspirational comedian Judson Laipply. Creator of “The Evolution of Dance,” the #1 video of all times on YouTube.com, Judson has brought smiles to hundreds of millions of people all over the globe. His Friday night keynote, “Life Is Change,” set the perfect tone for the opening of the convention, mixing laughter with lessons and inspirations with hilarity. The entire audience, students and adults alike, were left laughing and thinking. On Saturday morning, Judson was back, leading a convention service session in which he set out to teach the conventioneers the first 4 minutes of his Evolution of Dance routine. It was a sight to behold, as Key Clubbers from their teens to their seventies demonstrated their moves on the dance floor. After a very fast hour of exuberant and highly energized dance instruction and practice, Judson guided the participants into working groups who then set out to custom decorate T-shirts on more than 100 stuffed animals which had been donated to the convention. Those gaily decorated animals were delivered on Saturday afternoon to the Nashville Ronald McDonald House and to Vanderbilt University’s Children’s Hospital by a group of 10 students who were selected by lottery. To many of the attendees this session of fun and service was the highlight of the weekend. Those students lucky enough to be selected to deliver the animals had a Key Club experience which they will long remember.

The convention also had the thrill and the honor of hearing from one of its own members, 2009-2010 Key Club International President Abigail McKamey. President Abigail, from Lawrence County High School in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, has been a marvelous role model for Key Clubbers around the world this year as she has represented the organization and led it to new heights of service. In a unique and entertaining way, she introduced her audience to what they would see and experience at this summer’s Key Club International Convention in Memphis.

Key Club conventions are all about building excitement, motivation, and spirit which will be carried back to the home clubs to build a fire of enthusiasm for service. Judged by this standard, the 2010 convention was an extraordinary success. Conventions are a time for education as well, and this year’s convention offered 13 different workshop sessions, ranging from officer training to instructions on how to dress for success and how to participate in Key Club and the Kiwanis Family beyond the local club level. There was indeed something for everyone, and participation was extremely high. Workshops were held on both Friday night and Saturday morning, and even the sleep-deprived students on Saturday morning were found to be actively involved.

Key Club conventions are also the time to recognize excellence in Key Club service in the year just passed. The Recognition Session on Saturday night is one of the most anticipated events of the weekend, as the clubs and the individuals who have been judged “the best of the best” are revealed. The awards represent hundreds and even thousands of hours of service to school and community. A complete listing of all contest and award winners is posted on this website.

The final critical function of the Key Club District Convention is to elect the leaders who will head the district during the coming year. Each candidate faces rigorous questioning in two convention caucus sessions and makes a final presentation to the House of Delegates on Sunday morning before the votes are cast. The outstanding leaders chosen to lead the Kentucky-Tennessee District for the 2010-2011 Key Club year are: Governor Blake Roller from Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, Tennessee; Secretary Jessi Reed from Cocke County High School in Newport, Tennessee; and Treasurer Lane Northcutt from Franklin County High School in Frankfort, Kentucky. They will lead a district board of 15 Lt. Governors and other officers who will plan the activities of the K-T District for the next year.

The Governor’s Farewell Brunch on Sunday morning is a bitter-sweet time, for it is at that session that the board members who have guided the district during the year just ended are recognized and honored. As the outgoing officers were retired, a special thanks was given for the fantastic leadership provided by Governor KeriBeth Wilkins, Secretary Adam Dunn, Treasurer Kevin Odom, and the entire 2009-2010 District Board. They succeeded admirably.

The next big event on the Key Club calendar is the Key Club International Convention, which will be held July 7-11, 2010, in Memphis, Tennessee. Information concerning the Kentucky-Tennessee District Tour, which will run from July 6 through July 11, can be found on the Key Club District website – KTKey.org. Check it out, and make plans to attend. Next year’s District Convention will be held March 11-13, 2011, at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington, Kentucky. Information on that event will be released later in the year.

Spread the word about Key Club, and participate with us in all district and international events. You will be glad that you did!!!

Hello fellow Key Clubbers,

After over a week of sorting through and reading applications for the positions of District Bulletin Editor and Historian I have came to a decision. This process of appointing has been super hard for me as I received many great applications from members across the district. But I was able to finally come to a conclusion and select the appointees.

District Bulletin Editor:
This appointee is freshman member of the Cosby High School Key Club and their current club secretary. This member has been a a apart of their yearbook staff and newspaper staff along with being in creative writing classes there. This student is also very involved with her school all while maintaining a 4.0 average in school. So after these and many more reasons I have selected Katie Stuart as our new K-T District Bulletin Editor.

District Historian:
This appointee is a junior member of the Sullivan North Key Club and the past K-T Dist. Treasurer and Division 7 Lt. Governor. They have served on the district board for 2 years and been a member for 3. They are a member of the school marching band as well as their school yearbook staff. So with that and more, I chose Kevin Odom as our new District Historian.

I would like to thank all of the applicants. You all were highly qualified and I can tell that you are a great Key Clubber as well as a strong leader in your clubs and schools. I encourage you all to continue with your success through out the year. We are always looking for new Lt. Governors and other board members with qualifications like yours.

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather and are excited for spring break if you haven’t had it yet. As for the ones of you who attended DCON this past weekend, I would like to say thank you! We had a Great convention with almost 500 in attendance. Our district service project of dressing and sending 100 stuffed animals to the Ronald McDonald House and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital was a success. We enjoyed some great entertainment and learned a lot of new things as we came together as a district. I would like to thank everyone for electing me as your new governor! I have a lot of plans for this year and hope for the best.

I have attached applications for both district bulletin editor and district historian. These need to be filled out and either emailed or mailed back to me by April 5th. I will have these positions filled by the end of that week so the new board members may attend the spring board meeting and officer training. Please let your clubs know of these openings and send them on to anyone else you think may want them.

The K-T District is now on Facebook. So go look us up and add us for the latest happenings. And don’t forget to check out our district website www.ktkey.org. This site has been rebuilt and is still being worked on to best benefit you. We will soon launch an all electronic monthly report system based of this website.

I am still in the process of building a district wide email list. If you know of anyone who would like to receive my updates, please send me their email address. I hope to get these out to as many Key Clubbers as possible.

Please contact me anytime if you have any questions or if there is anything I can do for you. I’m on Facebook and you can shoot me a text message if you’d like.

thanks,
